Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as just a young girl. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay instantly became enthralled with the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury as well as go through their garbage. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided to not pursue journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity.
